How old are the dogs? My sheppard is near 12 years old and I wonder if it is time to start grooming a replacement. Or maybe it would be a bad thing to have a dog who has lived alone all of her life be joined by some cocky pup.

The big one (Hanna) is 6 1/2 and I think the little one (Sam)is about 5. I adopted both as rescues of sorts as adults. I didn't intend to keep Sam, b/c I didn't think Hanna would accept her, (Hanna fancies herself the alpha bitch of Sunset) but they are buddies now. The puppy will slightly annoy your old dog, but that can help keep the old one young.

Yeah, but Nikki is pretty young for her age. She's home alone sometimes and is an absolute hurricane when we get home. Plus she does the entire greenbelt on most days and is still ready to go.

Plus, she too, feels like she is the Alpha Female Dog of Sunset.

adam - you should get a second dog, albeit maybe a male dog. I had resisted getting a second dog thinking Hanna was used to being an only child, but it all worked out for the best :-)
