Hallelujah!!!!!!
Michael Vick was ordered by commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday to stay away from the Atlanta Falcons' training camp until the league reviews the dogfighting charges against him.

"While it is for the criminal justice system to determine your guilt or innocence, it is my responsibility as commissioner of the National Football League to determine whether your conduct, even if not criminal, nonetheless violated league policies, including the Personal Conduct Policy," Goodell said in a letter to the quarterback.

That's very good news.

I was flipping channels a few nights ago and landed on CNN. They had this one "media analyst" guy who was saying that if Vick had been arrested for drugs or domestic assault, it wouldn't even be a blip on the media radar because the public is almost used to celebrities and athletes getting arrested for that. But abuse and torture of animals is causing shock and outrage. Not to say that animal abuise isn't shocking and outrageous (especially at the scale Vick was carrying it out), but its says a lot about society when getting arrested for drug possession or a violent assault is commonplace for famous people.

Side note: Lindsay Lohan got arrested for (another) DUI today and they found cocaine on her. And I'm not surprised. I was kind of just waiting for it to happen.

Yeah! You were part of the effort to get them to do what is right.

mishy - I think many people, myself included, think there is a special place in hell for those who abuse children and animals. Both are also signs of a sociopathic personality. I also think people are willing to forgive something that shows a lapse in judgment - drunk driving, an isolated violent incident, as opposed to the systematic and long term situation we have with Vick that shows a serious lack of character

unfortunately, I think you are also right that some things have become to common place and almost blase

I am glad to see someone stand up for something they personally believe is wrong, instead of waiting to let the media and courts decide.

Nice! Too bad they don't play by those rules in the government.

I also think that animal abuse is horrific and completely shows exactly what type of person he is, don't get me wrong. I guess I was just a little saddened to hear someone say that the press wouldn't have given him a fraction of the coverage that this story is getting, if he had just been busted with drugs or had assaulted another person. It shows what society has evolved into. What's ironic is that Vick has been involved in both these incidents, once in 2005 when a woman claimed he had unprotected sex with her and knowingly gave her herpes (total class, eh ladies?), and earlier this year he was busted at Miami airport with some pot in the false bottom of a water bottle (what a winner he is!). Personally, I hadn't heard as much press over those two scandals, so I guess it's true.

I guess I'm just wondering, wasn't there a time when society held celebrities to a higher standard? Not necessarily the ~highest~ standard, but higher than what it is now? Wasn't there a time when a celebrity DUI was the exception, rather than the rule, because it had the power to ruin an image, rather than just get a little press? Maybe Paris Hilton marked the death of celebrity class and respectability.

Wait, wait, I was wrong in my previous comment. Apparently whatever was in his waterbottle wasn't pot. HOWEVER, he was asked to surrender the water bottle to security at the airport and he refused, which is just a stupid move. In an airport, you do what you are told.

But my last comment was wrong, he didn't have drugs on him.

I hope he gets the harshest punishment available, and then some.

mishy - an argument can be made that the studio machines were just better at protecting the celebs' images, but in this day and age of instant information that isn't possible . . .

Of course, sports guys like Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth would be crucified for their hard partying ways these days . . . I'm not sure that is a good thing either. I think most sports fans don't mind looking the other way for "boys will be boys" mishaps, and some may prefer that to athletes who come across as squeaky clean.

For me, Vick just belongs in a category of his own . . .

You do realize that this guy was a complete freak of nature, a physical specimen so rare that he was an AMAZING football player. So, answer me this. How screwed up do you have to be to throw your entire career away because you enjoy torturing animals? This is one of the saddest, most terrifying stories I've heard come out of the NFL since OJ!!!

While I feel very strongly about due process and "innocent until proven guilty." There is enough suspicious/circumstantial evidence pointing to the intense seriousness of this trial. And anyone facing such serious charges doesn't need to play football (nor is it best for the team) and should be focusing on their trial.

And athletes and celebs of the past were as notorious, it's just sportswriters would turn a blind eye and Golden Age H-Wood Studios had a bit more power. Though I would still say there's a difference in the way athletes and celebs are treated today. A few weeks ago A-Rod was photographed with a young lady who wasn't his wife. While he got a lot of attention, it pretty much died down after a couple days or so. Now when an A-list celebrity actor/actress/musician is photographed cheating it receives considerably longer attention. I believe this difference is because the ever-growing gossip industry profits a great deal more from the actor/actress/musician than from the athlete. And while the sports press has gotten a lot more gossipy, it doesn't compare to the levels of the gossip press/industry. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Funny, he still doesn't get what everybody is upset about. This guy needs to wear some T-bone underwear at the next fight.
